Rusizi port construction reaches over 95% completion, poised to transform regional trade and transport

The construction of Rusizi Port has reached an impressive milestone, with progress currently standing at 95.8%. The port, a key infrastructure project aimed at enhancing inland water transport on Lake Kivu, is expected to be fully completed by the end of 2025.
Once operational, Rusizi Port is projected to handle over 2.7 million passengers and more than 2.3 million tons of cargo annually. This capacity positions it as a major logistics hub, set to significantly boost regional trade, improve transport efficiency, and ease the movement of goods and people across the western region of Rwanda and DRC.
In addition to its future economic impact, the construction phase of the port has already generated tangible benefits for the local community. Over 200 people have been employed on-site, contributing to job creation and local economic stimulation.

The development of Rusizi Port is part of the Government of Rwanda’s broader strategy to modernize transport infrastructure, enhance regional integration, and unlock the economic potential of lake-based transport corridors.
As the project nears completion, it stands as a testament to Rwanda’s commitment to delivering transformative infrastructure that meets growing mobility and trade needs.
